Moving to a new house is exciting and daunting at the same time. There are a lot of things to do before you can comfortably settle in and enjoy the new property, but moving also gives you the opportunity to declutter and reorganize.
Good planning and a willingness to part ways with items that you no longer use is critical when you are moving to a new property. Having the right new-house essentials also helps reduce the hassle of moving in while staying organized.
Check the Storage
Before you start packing, make sure you do a thorough survey of the new house. You want to be extra certain that you have enough storage space for your belongings. Make a list of the storage compartments and additional space in every room so you can plan the move better.
With the list in hand, you can start decluttering as soon as you begin packing. Since you already know the storage space you will have in the new property, you can also mark boxes with the storage compartment they need to go to and simplify the process of unpacking further.
Prioritize
Next, walk around your current house and make a list of all the items you need to move. Be as detailed as you can and don’t leave any item out, especially the ones you want to keep. Once again, the list acts as your guide during the packing process.
The list also gives you a clearer view of how to best manage your belongings. You’ll start noticing items you haven’t used in a long time. In some cases, you may even discover things that you don’t even remember having.
This is a good time to sort and prioritize. Once again, knowing which items to leave out of the new property is key. If you don’t use it, you don’t need to pack and move it!
Don’t Forget the Essentials
Keep in mind that there are moving essentials that you will continue to need throughout the relocation process like a good first-aid kit and tools you use often such as a set of screwdrivers for making quick fixes. These are the items you don’t want to throw out.
In fact, you should complete your kit of essentials. You can, for example, checkout the various first-aid kits from MFASCO. Many of the kits by MFASCO are meant for offices and schools, but there are personal and home kits in the catalog too, plus you can create your own kit from scratch.
We also highly recommend getting some moving supplies and picking up a new set of tools from your favorite online retailers if you don’t have one already. Pick up a bag or a container that can keep these essential items organized and you are all set.
Pack and Unpack in Phases
Lastly, make sure you pack and unpack in phases. There is no need to rush through unpacking your moving boxes with the items prioritized and the boxes marked properly. You have the two lists to help you too.
Rather than creating new clutter around the new property, work your way towards unpacking the boxes in phases. Make sure all items from the box you open are stored in the designated storage space or compartment immediately.
With these tips in mind, moving to a new house is certainly less daunting. More importantly, you can stay organized during the house move, which means you will end the process with a new and completely decluttered house.
