But during this time he becomes cranky. With onset of every monsoon or winter he would suffer from mild cold and cough and ends up with tonsillitis-inflammation of tonsils. It is commonly seen in children between preschool and middle teen ages as they have weak immune system or are more immune to viruses or infections

- Bacterial tonsillitis or tonsillitis caused by group a streptococcus bacteria
- Viral tonsillitis or tonsillitis caused by viral infection and flu

Yes, tonsillitis is highly contagious as it can passed by coming in close contact with someone who is sick, sharing utensils, touching contaminated surfaces etc.

- Frequent exposure to the germs and viruses can cause tonsillitis or people who are exposed to such environment have higher chances of tonsillitis
- Most often tonsillitis affects young children or children between 5 to 15 years of age through bacteria so proper measures are essential
What are the preventive measures to avoid tonsillitis?
- Wash hands frequently especially after using the washroom as it contains the maximum number of bacterias
- Avoid sharing your food or water as tonsillitis is highly contagious or can spread from one person to another
- Practice good hygiene
Foods to take and avoid during tonsillitis:
Soft or cold foods should be preferred for example-frozen yogurt as it can provide temporary relief or it will be gentle on the throat, hard foods like chips, crackers etc should be avoided as it can cause increased irritation and pain in the throat

- People/ Children who suffer from tonsillitis frequently should make it a habit to gargle twice a day with warm salty water.
2. Antibiotics should be taken only if the doctor prescribes them.
Food during this period:
1. Scrambled egg:
My kid likes egg and savoring it in any form. During ongoing pain scramble egg is more beneficial than hard boiled egg or egg curry. Not only it is soft but also easy to swallow.
2. Boiled Rice/ Plain Khichdi:
Instead of chappati and rotisserie try boiled rice or plain khichdi.
3. Mashed potatoes:
Having mashed potatoes can also make living with tonsillitis a lot easier. Easy to swallow and rich in carbohydrates and we can add some vegetable like carrot and pepper it before serving. It helps to increase appetite.
Drinks to tackle Tonsillitis:
1. Ginger tea:
One best option. Avoid milk with health drinks. So whip some ginger tea when bugged by tonsillitis. Ginger has super anti inflammatory anti microbial properties, accelerate healing process.
2. Alum (Phitkari):
In tonsillitis do make your child gargle with Alum (Phitkari) twice a day. This is one of the most effective home remedies to tackle tonsillitis.
3. Salt water gargling:
Gargling or rinsing your mouth with salt water is a great home remedy for soothing of sore throat or pain which is caused by tonsillitis. Stir half a teaspoon of salt in around 4-5 ounces of water.

During tonsillitis, your kid suffers from an aching throat which makes it difficult to eat and drink for them. There are tonsillitis home remedies that include several food dishes that your child may not be able to take in during this time hence few items that you can give them are:
Plain Khichdi: A simple khichdi is easy to swallow and a healthy and nutritious food item too.
Mashed potatoes: Eating mashed potatoes may help significantly ease the discomfort of having tonsillitis. Before eating, you may add some vegetables, such as carrots, and flavour them. They are also simple to swallow and high in carbs. It aids in stimulating hunger.
Hard meals like fries, biscuits, etc. must be discouraged as they might exacerbate throat discomfort and pain. Gentle or cool foods, such as frozen yoghurt, should be chosen as they can temporarily relieve symptoms or are easy on the throat.
