We all know what is Positive Parenting and why it is so important for our children’s upbringing. But today I want to ask all parents to check on their positivity meter and understand how positive you are.
Let’s do a simple exercise. Answer these questions and make note of your choices. Do not scroll to the end and spoil the excitement.
Q 1. Given a choice what would you prefer to do on a normal working day?
- Cook a simple meal for you and your family
- Thaw a ready to eat packet you bought last week and eat it
- Order food from outside
- Skip meals
Q 2. What is the first thing you would like to hear in the morning?
- The sound of birds
- The alarm clock ringing
- The children yelling at the top of their voices
- You are not a morning person; you wake up late.
Q 3. How much time do you give to yourself mindfully every day?
- 1 hour
- Only on vacations
- I like to day dream each day
- Are you kidding me, where is the time?
Q 4. When was the last time you complimented someone?
- At every instance which calls for a compliment
- Occasionally
- I only compliment people I want to please
- Never, I don’t compliment anyone
Q 5. What do you do when you receive a compliment?
- Accept it with grace
- Find yourself out of words, hence keep quiet
- Deny it, giving credit to someone else
- Don’t say anything

Q 8. How do you spend your weekends?
- Spent time with family and kids
- Shop, clean the house, buy groceries and do laundry
- Party with friends

Q 9. When you are angry what do you do?
- Calmly analyse the situation and then react
- Take responsibility of the situation
- Start yelling and blame others
- Do not react
Q 10. How often do you smile?
- Every now and then
- Occasionally
- When there is a reason to smile
- I don’t smile at all.
Q 11. What makes you happy?
- Being in the present
- I was happy yesterday and maybe I will be happy tomorrow as well
- I will be happy when I lose weight, or buy my dream car
- What is happiness? I don’t know, bunk it
Now take a deep breath and check, if you answered mostly in C’s or D’s you need to change the way you think. Get up and get going now, for tomorrow may or may not come.
If you answered mostly in B’s then you are moving closer to thinking happy, all you need is a still more guidance and support. Keep going and you shall be thinking positively soon.
But if you answered in A’s then congratulate yourself for keeping your sunny side up and thinking positive.
Positivity is not a destination it is a journey. It requires greater dose of mindfulness and lifestyle modifications to stay positive and more importantly remain positive. Just like happiness positivity is a choice. And for us to foster positive parenting, we need to be positive first. Once this is done, the outcome will and shall ensure positive parenting. All you need is to foster the power of the mind, body and soul and reap the benefits of positive thinking.
Love yourself to love others thus enabling positive parenting.
Some points to keep in mind which will help you thinking positively.
- Let it go, forgive others, seek forgiveness from others and forgive yourself.
